RS Vareos at Hayling Island
The RS Vareos had their first coastal event at Hayling Island on the 30th
June. The forecast was for a 3-4 breeze strengthening to 4-5 during the
morning and gusting 6 by late afternoon, for once the forecast turned out
to be correct. All of the Vareos enjoyed some challenging conditions with
a lumpy sea and an increasing wind strength . The racing was very close
between the leaders with the top three all finishing with six points each
at the end of the day.
In the first race Graham Lewis led from David Machin and Simon Chapman
for most of the race until the last downwind leg when Graham found that
the Vareo is much slower when inverted, David and Simon flew past to
finish first and second respectively with Graham coming in third. In the
second race Simon was quick to spot at clear bias In the line and made a
flying start at the port end of the line passing across the Fleet. David
and Graham battled for second and third places with Graham overhauling
David on the last beat to finish second. The final race turned out to be
a a tight competition with places changing between Simon, David and
Graham. Simon led from Graham with David third round the final leeward
mark only to get caught up with a Solo which gave Graham the opportunity
to take the lead and David managed to squeeze ahead of Simon close to the
finish line.
This left David, Simon and Graham each with a first, second and third, as
the rules declare that in the case of a tie the result of the last race
shall be used to break the tie leaving Graham the winner with David
second and Simon third.
