Results / RS Fat Face Circuit Hayling Island - 30/06/2002

RS Vareos at Hayling Island The RS Vareos had their first coastal event at Hayling Island on the 30th June. The forecast was for a 3-4 breeze strengthening to 4-5 during the morning and gusting 6 by late afternoon, for once the forecast turned out to be correct. All of the Vareos enjoyed some challenging conditions with a lumpy sea and an increasing wind strength . The racing was very close between the leaders with the top three all finishing with six points each at the end of the day. In the first race Graham Lewis led from David Machin and Simon Chapman for most of the race until the last downwind leg when Graham found that the Vareo is much slower when inverted, David and Simon flew past to finish first and second respectively with Graham coming in third. In the second race Simon was quick to spot at clear bias In the line and made a flying start at the port end of the line passing across the Fleet. David and Graham battled for second and third places with Graham overhauling David on the last beat to finish second. The final race turned out to be a a tight competition with places changing between Simon, David and Graham. Simon led from Graham with David third round the final leeward mark only to get caught up with a Solo which gave Graham the opportunity to take the lead and David managed to squeeze ahead of Simon close to the finish line. This left David, Simon and Graham each with a first, second and third, as the rules declare that in the case of a tie the result of the last race shall be used to break the tie leaving Graham the winner with David second and Simon third.
Overall Results: 1st 157 Graham Lewis (Salcombe YC) 6 pts; 2nd David Makin (Netley SC) 6 pts; 3rd 161 Simon Chapman (Chew Valley) 6 pts: 4th Christopher Froehlich (Burghfield) 19 pts; 5th 193 Graham Cooper (Bradford on Avon SC) 24pts.
